I was put on this earth to be a coach… even on my lowest days it makes me feel alive.
Around this time six years ago, is when I decided coaching is what I wanted to do with my life. I was training part-time but I was ready to go all in. Enter three amazing friends with complimentary skills sets and a common goal and in the Spring of 2011 we opened Friendship CrossFit. We worked hard but it always felt like things fell into place, just like they were supposed to. Five years later I couldn’t be prouder of what we had built.
Six Months ago, Kristen and I left everything behind and moved to Phoenix to do it all over again. Things would just need to fall in place one more time and we would be happier and more successful than ever. Up until the day we left everything was doing just that. Our financial backing was there, we had an amazing place to live for the summer, and right before we left CrossFit approved our name (which is no small task). MINT CrossFit was ready to roll, we just needed a space to call home.
The first space our broker took us too in July was pretty great. It checked most of our needs and the previous tenet (a turf company) was even going to leave us a strip of field turf. Perfect! Except the landlord wouldn’t agree to the lease, he didn’t like CrossFit (not the last time that would happen). This is what began a six-month process of denial. Sound Concerns, right to first refusal, Permits, TI Cost. Think of a way to lose out on a space and we have experienced it. Twice we have reached the end of lease negotiations and had the deal fall apart at the very last second. It’s a hard pill to swallow… Every time.
So here we are. January 2017 was supposed to be a big month for us and we find ourselves no closer to finding a home than we were when we started. It’s so hard to admit we’re failing, but we haven’t failed. We have learned from every space that we lost out on. We have met amazing people through the jobs we had to get and made connections that we would have never made if we hadn’t. We began doing park workouts and have a group of people that work hard and are so much fun. They remind me every time why I love coaching.
I’m not big on New Years Resolutions but I do believe that it can be a time to declare a fresh start. Things have always seemed to fall into place for me and for the first time I find myself in hole that we have to climb out of. 2017 is going to be a great year for MINT CrossFit, I truly believe that. I was put on this earth to be a coach… I can’t wait to share that with the world again!
